Ayurvedic Food; Are you Kapha?

Recently when I was travelling around India one of the ayurvedic doctors I met diagnosed me with having a dosha of Kapha.  I have since read that kapha people have a strong build and excellent stamina, large, soft eyes; smooth, radiant skin; and thick hair. I am expected to sleep soundly and have regular digestion.  When Kapha builds to excess, I may suffer from weight gain, fluid retention, and allergies.

I like the bit where it says  Kaphas are naturally calm, thoughtful, and loving. They have an inherent ability to enjoy life and are comfortable with routine. If I stay in balance, Kaphas are strong, loyal, patient, steady, and supportive. On the flip side I may tend to hold on to things, jobs, and relationships long after they are no longer nourishing or necessary. In the face of stress, the typical Kapha response is “I don’t want to deal with it.” I can remember saying this before.

The ancient practice of Ayurveda believes we're made up of three different 'body types' that correspond to our physical and personality traits, known as doshas. These are: vata, pitta and kapha, each of which represents two of the five universal elements (a combination of ether, air, fire, water, earth).
According to Ayurvedic principles if I support Kapha and balance pitta and vata my health should on the most part remain good.

Ayurvedic Food; Do you live to eat or eat to live?

When I visited an Ayurvedic hospital in India, I learnt about their ways to use food as part of the healing process.  The food is prepared to be simple and easy on the stomach. They advise 'Do not allow your mind to get distracted by the lack of variety in food'.  They believe that every ingredient in the food should benefit your body in some way.  I found it very tasty and loved getting my nutrition from all the herbs and vegetables they had growing on the hospital grounds.

Our doctor posed the question "Do you live to eat or eat to live?".  Good question especially when you look at some of our western habits.

As we ponder this question let me introduce to you the 10 principles of a healthy Ayurvedic diet.
  • Food needs to be hot (usually cooked).
  • Food needs to be tasty and easy to digest.
  • Food needs to be eaten in the proper amounts, not too much or too little.
  • Food needs to be eaten on an empty stomach, after last meal has been digested, and not before.
  • Foods need to work together and not contradict one another in their actions.
  • Foods need to be eaten in pleasant surroundings with the proper equipment for their enjoyment.
  • Eating should not be rushed.
  • Eating should not be a horrendously drawn out affair, either.
  • It is best to focus on food while eating.
  • Only eat food which is nourishing to particular constitution and which suits mental and emotional Temperament.

If you would like to experience Ayurvedic Food first hand we are running an Adore Yoga Retreat next November.  Introduction to Ayurvedic Medicine.  Up on the Adore Yoga Website soon

The Thyroid Gland looks and acts like a Butterfly

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland at the base of your neck is highly responsive to stress. This is because of it's interaction with the adrenal gland.
The  adrenal glands are the little glands sitting on top of your kidneys.  They  do a lot in the body on a daily basis and when we don't take care of them (or ourselves) they ramp up and/or burn down. Within their three layers, they are responsible for producing a multitude of hormones you are familiar with such as cortisol, DHEA, epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine, testosterone, and progesterone.

The adrenal glands interact with many other endocrine glands, but in particular is the thyroid.  When stress is high or ongoing, the thyroid system down regulates and less thyroid hormone is produced. High cortisol also reduces the conversion of T4 to T3 (which is why many clinicians test reverse T3 too).  This makes a big difference if your goal is to fat burn.  I see it in the clinic again and again, the best weight loss results happen when you slow down and destress.  At any time of the year  we try and do more and just a little bit more pushing the adrenal gland, down regulating the thyroid and halting fat burning.  So SLOW DOWN, treat the thyroid like a delicate butterfly and it will perform for you.

The second thing to know is this butterfly is very reactive to chemicals and pesticides.  This means cleaning up your act.  Plan some regular safe detoxing at least twice per year.  Try our Clean Within program and we can taylor it to do on a regular basis.

The third thing to know is that you can't cheat with weight loss.  If you want to burn fat, you can, but you need to be 100% compliant.  Don't think you can hide the odd potato or sandwich and get good results.  Take a thyroid supplement to nurture the gland and be really really good with your food choices and you'll find you can still reach your health goals.

The Balanced Diet

Why losing weight is hard – but not impossible

Losing weight might make you healthier but not happier

‘Fat blaster’ drug can give you weight loss to die for

How close are we to the fat-fighting drugs we need?

Health Check: what’s the best diet for weight loss?

Explainer: the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery

Caveman cravings? Rating the paleo diet

Do we need to look for short cuts, surgery and snappy answers? If you look up weight loss it appears many people are  looking for answers. These are the heading above of the latest articles. My question is are we looking in the wrong places?
What's wrong with a balanced diet? On a balanced diet you should be able to fat burn, leap with energy and feel vital.  If that's not happening maybe there is an underlying medical condition that if treated would have you leaping for joy. Some of these underlying conditions include;
  • Insulin Resistance
  • High Cortisol levels
  • Endocrine imbalances
  • Toxicity
  • Digestive Dysfunction
  • Low vitamin D levels
To find out more about these underlying conditions just ask us at Cranes Pharmacy. Our health program Thin Within covers all these areas and more.

Female Hormonal Disorders Made Easier

Simple Strategies for Great Clinical Outcomes
What can go wrong with hormones? I hear you...there's a lot but my goal is to make it simple.

Let's make it easy and look at 4 patterns;
  • Excessive estrogen activity
  • Deficient progesterone activity
  • Deficient estrogen activity
  • Excessive testosterone activity
Excessive estrogen activity causes inflammation and growth. This can occur in fibroids, endometriosis & cancers of the cervix, breast & prostate. Common symptoms include mennorrhagia, menstrual clotting and dysmenorrhoea.  Contributing factors include;
  • Normal gonadal synthesis
  • Increased tissue synthesis  ( this is the reason that sometimes the symptoms do not match the blood testing)
  • Increased ER-alpha activity, this is a specific estrogen receptor that is increased in insulin resistance and obesity
  • Comodulation this includes input from neurotransmitters such as serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine.
  • Hormone metabolism, how we break down the estrogen
  • Endocrine disrupting chemicals look around you plastics are everywhere
Deficient progesterone activity can cause PMS, PMDD, irregular cycles and infertility. Common symptoms include low mood, anxiety, depression, cravings, breast pain & dysmennohoea. We sometimes hear comments like "Before my period I feel like killing someone" or "when my period starts I tell my husband to duck and hide for the next two days".
Contributing factors include;
  • Low gonadal synthesis
  • Tissue synthesis
  • Receptor activity
  • Lack of neurotransmitter response to hormones
  • Imbalanced detoxification
  • Xeno estrogen excess
Deficient estrogen activity can occur in menopause.  Common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, depression, low libido and vaginal dryness.
Contributing factors include;
  • Low gonadal synthesis
  • Low or high local synthesis
  • Receptor activity
  • Neurotransmitter and stress hormone imbalance
  • Imbalanced detoxification
  • Xeno estrogen excess
Excessive testosterone activity occurs in PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Common symptoms include acne, facial hair, visceral obesity, amenohoea and infertility.
Contributing factors include;
  • High gonadal synthesis
  • Tissue synthesis
  • Receptor activity
  • Insulin comodulation
  • Impaired phase 11 detoxification
  • Xeno-estrogen excess
Naturopathy is all about treating the contributing factors.  Treat the factor that is causing the imbalance and the symptoms start to disappear.  The Pink Within Program is coming soon to join Cranes Pharmacy other health programs.  Be the first to book in starts February 2015.

Inhalations to Clear the Nose

The Power of Inhalation
During winter season, more people congregate indoors – sharing warmer confines, swapping stories over a hot cuppa choco... and trading germs. It takes 200 types of virus to bring about a cold. But it takes only one sneezy, coughy person three feet away to send a roomful of noses running.
A great way to reduce the germ count is to have a vaporiser going in the room with Breathe easy drops.
We have a great selection to choose from.

Clean WithIn detoxification Programs. Lose Fat, Look Great and Feel Healthier

A great cleansing program is a series of steps taken to actively enhance the elimination of wastes from your body. It's a bit like taking out the garbage.

Our therapeutic goals are to;
  • Reduce dietary toxins
  • Improve detoxification capacity
  • Neutralize free radicals
  • Eliminate waste products

Our most popular program is the Integrated Clean Within program. I recommend it for most clients to improve their digestive health, liver function and overall health and wellbeing.

In recent years we have learnt about our microbiome and just how large it is. Did you know that if we count all our cells there are only 10% human, the rest is our bugs?.
Our bodies have 2-4 kilos of bacteria living in the digestive system. It is there for a reason, to help break down food and produce vitamins for us. Sometimes this colony gets out of kilter. The more unbeneficial bacteria can grow and upset the balance. Sometimes we experience symptoms, sometimes we do not notice or sometimes it has been unbalanced for so long that we think it is normal. Symptoms may include stomach ache, bloating, flatulence, burping, thrush, recurrent fungal infections, lack of concentration and focus, diarrhoea and constipation. The Specialised Gut Clean Within program is designed to bring back the balance.

Toxins are everywhere and we are all affected. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) are found in everyone and everywhere on our planet- in our food, soil, air water and homes. Humans and wildlife around the world carry POPs in their bodies at or near levels that can cause injury. Toxic chemicals are found in all human tissue including cord blood and breastmilk. Indoor environments are often more contaminated than outdoors. If you have had a high level of chemical exposure or your liver requires additional support the Specialised Liver Clean Within Program is the one for you.

Heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, mercury or cadmium accumulate in your system and can cause problems with remembering things, adding up numbers or finding the right word to express yourself. You may get numbness, tingling or weakness in parts of your body. Their build up has been linked to chronic disease. If this applies to you the Specialised Chelation Clean within Program is specific for you.

Look forward to more energy and vitality. Ring Cranes Pharmacy today to book an appointment to Clean Within   9969 4700

Functional Medicine Approach to Managing Oestrogen Metabolisim and Reducing Breast Cancer Risk

In Australia it is expected that 1 in 3 women and 1 in two men will live with cancer before the age of 80.  In many of these cancers oestrogens are a recognised risk factor.  It is not any wonder that I loved listening to Dr Eleanor Rogan from Nebraska at the recent International Congress on Natural Medicine.
Her work is based on balancing oestrogen metabolism and inhibiting the formation of oestrogen-DNA adducts.  High oestrogen-DNA adduct ratio in women at high risk for breast cancer are consistent with the formation of oestrogen-DNA adducts initiating a series of events leading to breast cancer.  She has discovered two supplements that help prevent oestrogen initiated cancers by reducing oestrogen-DNA adducts..  They are resveratrol and N-Acetylcysteine (NAC).
This is the first study to show that we can achieve statistically significant decrease in oestrogen-DNA adducts and presumably, risk breast cancer.  N-acetylcysteine and resveratrol are two dietary supplements that appear to stop oestrogen-induced cancers from starting.
We have made them up into a simple monthly pack and are available from Cranes Pharmacy Clinic.

10 Toxic Truths

  1. Toxins are everywhere and we are all affected.                                                               Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) are found
in everyone and  everywhere on our planet- in our food, soil, air water and homes.  Humans and wildlife around the world carry POPs in their bodies at or near levels that can cause injury. Toxic chemicals are found in all human tissue including cord blood and breastmilk.  Indoor environments are often more contaminated than outdoors.
  2. The Full extent is unknown.  Toxins are often invisible, deadly and latent.  Over 140 000 toxic chemicals are used commercially, over 3000 in high volume with 1500 new chemicals released each year.
  3. Tiny doses can cause big effects.  Toxicologists traditionally assumed that the dose makes the poison with a monotonic dose response curve.  This is the basis for regulation of public safety limits.  However dose can be non-monotonic.
  4. Chemical cocktails are synergistic.  Exposure to a mixture of chemicals is far more harmful than exposure to individual chemicals.  Toxins are tested for safety individually if they are tested at all.
  5. Windows of development are critical.  Effects of EDCs are often irreversible with effects not evident till later in life.
  6. Kids are more at risk.  Compared to adults they have higher food, fluid and air intake per kg, higher absorption and metabolic rate, immature immune and detox systems, more exposure to the ground & more hand to mouth behaviour
  7. Biomagnification up the food chain. POPs such as DDT & PCB persist for years in the environment.  They biomagnify up through the food chain.
  8. Bioaccumulation over a lifespan. Fat soluble toxins are not usually excreted and accumulate in fatty tissue over an individual life span.
  9. Effects are epigenetic and transgenerational. Maternal exposure affects the unborn child and future grandchildren (and possibly great grand children)
  10. Injustice and accidents happen.  BP oil spill (2012), Exxon Valde (1989), Bhopal (1984), Fukishima (2011), Love canal (1978)
You may say evidence for a detox is scanty but what else can you do where the evidence is so concrete on how quickly we are toxifying ourselves and our world.

This is from a lecture presented by Professor Marc Cohen at 2014 International Congress on Natural Medicine.

Toxins and Chronic Disease

There is a global epidemic of obesity, diabetes, ADHD, depression and cancer.  My question is why are environmental toxins rarely considered as a risk factor for chronic disease.
I know myself how my health changed changed considerably from removing one amalgam. Previously I have had 2 mouth operations and countless dental hygienist appointments every 3 months over 3 years for unexplained gum disease.  My specialist said that I would probably lose two teeth in the next 2 years.  Now all the symptoms have gone.
I have clients in my clinic with all the above diagnosis who have improved their health with integrated detoxification.  Consider being tested today at our functional health clinic at Cranes Pharmacy.

Virus Time

Virus Time is nearly here
Viruses can have immune systems, new research shows
Feb 27, 2013
A study published today in the journal Nature reports that a viral predator of the cholera bacteria has stolen the functional immune system of bacteria and is using it against its bacterial host. The study provides the first evidence that this type of virus, the bacteriophage ("phage" for short), can acquire a wholly functional and adaptive immune system.
It seems each year the viruses are getting smarter so we need to get smarter too. At Cranes Pharmacy we have a whole artillery to help your immune system. Some are on prescription in the form of antibiotics and antivirals and some are available over the counter.  Check out this months special offer Ethical Nutrients Immune pack just $49.95 and it includes Zinc Fix, Cold & Flu tablets and Immune Defense.  Pop one in the cupboard for insurance.
It's a great time to visit our health hub at Cranes Pharmacy to discuss how to bullet proof yourself this winter.

Heart attack iNFLUENCES the will to quit smoking

I am delighted to hear that Cranes Pharmacy is now approved as a site to conduct the SCUPI quit smoking study. If you would like to give up smoking now is the time to enroll at our pharmacy.

This is really timely, because the researchers have recently had a related paper on the topic published in the Journal of Smoking Cessation. Essentially, the paper showed that almost two thirds of people with heart attack, stopped smoking – emphasising the importance of the teachable moment. The smoking study is about trying to recreate that with a “simulated personalised teachable moment”

See Acute Coronary Syndrome as a Teachable Moment for Smoking Cessation

http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=9125738

“Smoking is one of the leading risk factors of heart disease and yet it is one of the most preventable risk factors as well! This is why Heart Research Australia is passionate about supporting and funding research into the behavioural influences that could trigger a person to quit this dangerous habit and empowering people to start living a heart healthy lifestyle”, said Floyd Larsen, CEO at Heart Research Australia.

This is a fun study to join as it's easy to do.  It involves watching videos.  The videos are designed to change your mindset.  Come into the pharmacy and have a chat to see if you are eligible for the study.  There is no charge.

Teenagers and Depression

I an not a physiologist, a psychiatrist or a counselor.........so why are teenagers getting better in my clinic with the Happiness Within Program?  Maybe the answer is to look outside the box.

We check gut health for everyone who comes into the clinic. We use Urinary Indicans Testing to see how healthy your gut bacteria is ( after all you have 4 kilos of it).  It is well documented the link between depression and gut health. The level of inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract has a bidirectional impact on behavior. Researchers have found that depression can influence the vulnerability of the gut to inflammation; and in turn, this inflammation may influence depression and anxiety.(1).

We  consider and test for food intolarances where applicable.  Particular foods may not be tolerated well in the body setting up inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract  and in the same way as above effect mood.

Have you considered the blood, brain barrier (BBB)?  New research has found it gets leaky. Inflammatory reactions in the body set up this leakiness and substances that would normally not cross the BBB leak into the brain.  What effect does this have?  The teenagers of today have been exposed to more chemicals than ever before so we don't know  all of the consequences.  What we do know is there is a link between toxicity and brain health.  We screen everyone who comes into our clinic for heavy metals.  This lets us see if toxicity is an issue.

What have you got to lose?  None of these tests are terribly invasive, they are simple to do and because we do them in the clinic you get fast results.

Food Detective; When is it time to check for Food Intolarances?

It may be time right now.  Do you have any of the following symptoms?

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Arthritis - joint pain, stiffness & swelling
  • Chronic Respiratory symptoms (wheezing )
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Bowel Problems (colitis, diarrhoea )
or

§Bloating

§Insomnia

§Weight problems/Obesity

§Anxiety

§Skin problems (eczema)

§Persistent cough

§Palpitations
These could be all indications that you are eating the wrong food for your body.

How can these intolerances just suddenly appear?
Generally, foods are broken down during digestion into their component parts e.g. amino acids, glycerides etc. These pass harmlessly through the gut into the bloodstream. However, occasionally small fragments of partially digested or undigested foods are able to pass through the gut wall into the bloodstream where they are recognized by the immune system as being ‘foreign’. The immune system responds by making antibodies (IgGs). In some patients, inflammation or irritation of the intestinal lining allows partially digested foods to leak into the bloodstream. This condition is called ‘leaky gut syndrome’ and patients with this condition typically have high levels of antibodies to multiple foods. Additionally for some people it may be that their immune system isn't as efficient at removing these antibodies that form immune complexes with the food (antigen), which leads to inflammation that can appear as a food intolerance.

Some of the things that can cause this are;

  • Antibiotics
  • Medication/Drugs
  • Candida overgrowth
  • Parasites
  • Intestinal bacterial/viral infection
  • Glutamine insufficiency
  • Alcohol
  • Poor diet
  • Stress
  • Low stomach acid
  • Low pancreatic enzyme
What can you do?
It's as easy as three steps
  1. Optimise gut function. We run a six week program called Clean Within that heals and cleans out the digestive system
  2. Identify and remove allergen. In the clinic we use a test known as Food detective to analyse the foods you are reacting to.
  3. Stay fit for life, don't skip meals, eat regular meals, come and get regular check ups and reduce refined foods.

Cranberry. Does it work for Urinary Tract Health?

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Amy Howell.  She is from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA.She has been studying Cranberries since 1993.  That's 21 years so you could imagine she just about knows all there is to know about cranberry.
Her research has been published extensively in many journals.  Three points that I found extremely interesting are;
  • Products labeled as cranberry can be a different berry that looks like cranberry but does not have the same urinary tract effect
  • Some products contain the skin of the cranberry where the active constituent cannot be accessed.
  • Dose is very important.  To get enough of the active ingredient you need a standardised dose of 36mg PACS.
So if you've tried cranberry before and not found it useful it is probably due to one of these reasons.  A new product just released in Australia has Dr. Howell's full approval.  It is called Ellura by Flordis.
This extract of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) has been shown to help prevent potentially harmful bacteria (E.coli) from sticking to urinary tract walls and effectively flush out the bacteria from the urinary tract to help promote urinary tract health. By helping to maintain a clean urinary tract, Ellura may help to reduce the frequency of recurrent cystitis (infection of the bladder) in women.

Happiness Within ; Foods that Heal and Harm the Brain

Culinary culprits: foods that may harm the brain

Effects of the diet on the brain are largely unexplored, with pretty much all the attention being paid to the negative impact on rest of the body. However, from sugar and carbohydrates to fats and even grains, the list of dietary choices having potentially negative effects on the brain is growing...fast! Although a bulk of the evidence shows an association with, but not a causation of mental health and cognitive decline, many clinicians are reporting seeing first-hand improvements in patients' mental health outcomes with dietary changes that eliminate the notorious dietary culprits.

In an Australian study, they looked at the main culprits (junk food e.g.chips, chocolate, pizza, sweets and soda)  and saw that it had an impact on adolescent's mental health status over a 2-year period. Again, junk food eaten in pregnancy and the first 5 years of life has been shown to cause aggression, hyperactivity, or tantrums amongst children independent of confounding factors and of the childhood diet.

What are these foods doing in our brain? High amounts of saturated fats and sugars have a negative impact on brain proteins called neurotrophins. Neutrophins are the clever guys that protect the brain against oxidative stress.
Rosemary Manners's Happiness Within Program is designed to go along with your other therapies.  It looks at your nutrition, your lifestyle choices and your mindset in relationship to your brain health and the emotions you feel.  Happiness Within is one of the health programs run at Cranes Pharmacy.  Sounds interesting? Book an appointment.  Till end of March first appointments with testing is reduced to only $100.

Knickers for Nepal, Seven Women and Everest Base Camp

Seven Women began in Nepal in 2009. It is a grass roots project to create new lives for seven disabled
women were found abandoned in a tin shed enduring discrimination and hardship. Seven Women founder Stephanie Woollard first met them while traveling in Nepal and started a training training program for them in the hope skills would give them independence and a means to earn an income. Now with a dedicated and passionate team they have been able to establish two centres in Nepal which have trained and employed over 550 women. Last year we supported Seven Women and I thought I'd like to do it again this year but with a difference. We will be selling knickers. I'd like to deliver the knickers myself to their centre in Katmandu on my way to Everest Base Camp. Women often arrive at the centre with nothing and it it simple things like this, a warm meal and place to sleep that can make the biggest difference. You can help them too by buying some knickers at the shop for $10.00 and we'll deliver it in April.

Inner Health; Improving your health on the inside will help you shine on the outside.

Searching for an easy way to look after yourself? Bring back your health and wellness by taking an
Ethical Nutrients probiotic every day. Improving your health on the inside will help you shine on the outside, because a happy gut means a happier and healthier you.

At the pharmacy we always recommend Inner Health Plus for any digestive concern but especially after antibiotics.

This is what the reviews say;

I don't take them all the time, but they are an absolute godsend after taking antibiotics. Inner Health Plus really helped me recover from the antibiotic therapy.

I have Ulcerative Colitis and Diverticular Disease. I've been taking Inner Health Plus for about 4 months for this as well as having been on Antibiotics. I have not had a 'flar up' of my bowel problems since then. My gut feels a lot more settled and not like there's a war going on in it. Best I've felt in years.

Inner Health Plus with stop you from looking bloated, and will keep you regular, which is great, but not why I'm doing this review. I just had to let all you all know that this stuff will stop Gastro in it's tracks.

I have used this product off and on for several years and find it really is something that should be taken almost daily. People in general do not realise how important it is to be regular, this product does an excellent job of that at the same time creating a better internal balance. Somewhat like a grease and oil change on a car if you like. I cannot recommend Inner Health Plus highly enough. I have tried two other non refrigerated similar products however they were virtually a waste of time and money.
