"I recently attended the workshop with my slightly reluctant 14 year old daughter. I was hoping that my daughter would learn a few skills to cope with the stress of relationships, body image and shaky self esteem. As it turned out we both learnt heaps and the workshop was full of practical information and ideas to improve communication. My daughter said she found it interesting and I had noticed her thoughtfully taking notes. I was thrilled when later that day she texted me to say she had tried a communication skill, on her friends! I could not ask for more than that as she was already using a new skill and feeling confident and excited about it. I am pleased that we both now have a folder of information so we can refer back to the ideas from the workshop and I can continue to encourage my daughter (and myself of course!) to try other new skills. The workshop was a very positive mother/daughter experience and gave us lots to discuss and build on in our relationship. I have been telling all my friends to do this workshop, with their daughters of course!" Sarah, Sydney.

"I am a leader in a Scout camp and the skill I learnt will help me when I am there in a few weeks" Hugo, 14 years old.

Do Statin Drugs Deplete you of Co enzyme Q10?

Unfortunately the answer is yes. The cholesterol-lowering drugs block all our cells ability to make both cholesterol and the nutrient co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Statins block the production of a molecule, which is the essential precursor to both cholesterol and CoQ10 production.
What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 was discovered by Fred Crane, Ph.D. in 1957 and is now known to be a powerful antioxidant. CoQ10 is made in our body and we also obtain some from our food. We make the most CoQ10  at the same time as we reach our peak athletic performance, which is in our mid 20s and thereafter we become more dependent on dietary sources. CoQ10 is most highly concentrated in organ meats such as heart, liver, and kidney, which we do not usually eat these days.
So if we put all the facts together, the combination of statin and low dietary intake, this can lead to severe depletion of this essential nutrient. If you lower cholesterol by 40% with statin drug therapy, you will lower CoQ10 levels by 40% too. CoQ10 is the cofactor, or coenzyme, necessary for the production of about 90% of our cellular energy and it follows that almost all patients taking statin drugs experience some degree of fatigue and muscle weakness.
Statin drug side effects may include varying degrees of fatigue, muscle weakness and/or muscle pain, shortness of breath with exertion, impairment in short-term memory, peripheral neuropathy with numbness and tingling in the feet and liver damage.
There was a study done in 2004, a study published in the American Journal of Cardiology documented evidence of early heart muscle weakness in 70% of patients taking statin drug therapy for a period of six months. Interestingly, this early heart muscle weakness reversed back to normal by adding supplemental CoQ10 at 100mg three times daily (total of 300mg/day).
More recently, other studies have shown reversal of skeletal muscle pain and weakness by adding supplemental CoQ10 to statin drug therapy.
Should I take statins and CoQ10 together?
Interestingly this is not new knowledge as in 1990  Merck & Co., Inc. (the manufacturer of two statin drugs, lovastatin and simvastatin) obtained two patents to combine CoQ10 with the statin drug in the same tablet to prevent liver and muscle damage. These patents have not been acted upon, the basic science behind them is sound and taking supplemental CoQ10 with a statin drug makes perfect sense. Importantly, taking a CoQ10 supplement does not affect the cholesterol-lowering action of the statin drugs.
So the answer is yes I always recommend taking CoQ10 with statins to lessen the side effects of the statin and to increase overall health. Co10 is better absorbed with a meal and I recommend a dose of 150mg per day.

Diabetes Month at the Pharmacy

Lets look at the facts;
  • 280 Australians develop diabetes every day
  • Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease (updated 15/10/12)
  • Nearly 1,000,000 Australians are currently diagnosed with diabetes.
  • For every person diagnosed, it is estimated that there is another who is not yet diagnosed; a total of about 1.7 million people
  • The total number of Australians with diabetes and pre-diabetes is estimated at 3.2 million
  • As the sixth leading cause of death in Australia, it is critical we take action
  • Up to 60% of cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented.
What are we missing? Did you read the bit where it says 60% of the cases can be prevented?  That's more than half.  This silent pandemic is having a huge impact in Australia, a huge impact on Mosman and a huge impact on us.
What decisions are we making to cause this?  There is an urgent and growing need to promote and discuss the issues around this out of control pandemic.  We need to focus our minds on what we are eating, what we are doing with our bodies and what we are thinking.  If we don't the figures just get worst and worst.
This month across the pharmacies we are focusing on Cholesterol and Diabetes, come and talk to us, we have lots of ideas or how to get the most out of your medications, what supplements to take to help the medication to work better, nutritional consultations and naturopathic protocols.  Ask us about Diabetics Medschek.  Don't let this rule your life.  Find a new perspective where you can rule your own health.

Courage to SHOUT about Health.

On the weekend I was talking to one of my customers, she was telling me that her teenage son had just died from brain cancer.  It made me remember my best fried who died from an untreatable rapidly growing cancer when we were in our 20's.  It doesn't end there and it's all very sad.
However as I think about it the sadness changes to courage.  Courage to create a larger platform for health.  A platform for health, to SHOUT about health so that Australians begin to listen.
When you look at the Australian statistics we are not very disease proof.  We may live a long time but we are not very well.  In a recent study 75% of participants over 40 said that they lived with a chronic disease.  One in two blokes (one in three women) will live with cancer in their lifetime.  And as for fleshiness, we are drowning in it with 66% of Australians classified as obese.
We are at a stage where we can't afford to be complacent.  Health needs to be the first thing we think about when we wake up and the last consideration before bed.  We live a very different life from the one our bodies were adapted for and this needs to be factored in.  Every day we need to consider what we put into our bodies, consider what we do with our bodies and consider how we choose to think.
Maybe this is the key. Where to start? We may need to change our minds.  Change our minds and make better choices so that the chemical soup that we live in does not effect our bodies in such a big way.  This is going to take courage as you will be swimming against the current.  You may need to make decisions that may not be considered "normal".  But we already know that our "normal" is not working.  We are living with more disease than ever before.
What are my top 10 courageous decisions?

  1. Nature, find it somewhere every day, hug the trees and breathe the air, relax in the feeling
  2. Water, lots of it, fresh and as pure as you can get
  3. Whole foods, vegetables and fruit and more vegetables.  Forget about anything in a packet.
  4. Sunlight, 15 minutes per day to 70% of your body
  5. Exercise and movement, minimum 1/2 hour each day.
  6. Find what gives you pleasure and happiness and spend some time each day doing it.
  7. Throw away the garbage, do a detox, get rid of toxic relationships, shed the baggage.
  8. Purpose.  Believe in something, find a dream and chase it to the end of the rainbow
  9. Community. Put back for the greater good, feel the love in the air.
  10. Family. Make peace and find a way to work together, creating a health platform for you all to stand on side by side.
What are your top 10 courageous decisions?  How will you find health?  Start little and then help me to join the SHOUT about health.

January is a time to Recharge and Relax

It seems that the end of 2012 involved a lot of racing around.  Our bodies were in full flight or fight response with cortisol flying around our systems.  Now is the time to change this, unwind and rejuvenate our bodies.
2013 I have unofficially made it the year of health to learn more and do more with our bodies, finding that health space.  A  good place to start is with Magnesium.

Magnesium is pretty important, in fact it is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function. It helps relax the muscles, sodium contracts and magnesium relaxes our busy muscles.  Hence it is great to take extra magnesium in conjunction with exercise and when we are asking our bodies to do extra.

Magnesium keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis . Magnesium is taken as a supplement to prevent and manage disorders such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Dietary magnesium is absorbed in the small intestines.

Thinking some extra Magnesium could help you? Luckily Ethical Nutrients has just the thing to help......Recharge and Relax
Meta Mag™ Magnesium and Rhodiola for Energy and Stress Relief.
It may;
  • Improve mental performance when stressed and fatigued.
  • Reduce physical and mental fatigue.
  • Maintain a healthy stress response.
  • Be beneficial during times of stress.
  • Assist cellular energy production.

Superfoods; Are they sexy or what? Part two

Here's a list;
Quinoa, almonds, chia seeds, kale, coriander, seaweed, cacoa, cinamin, coconut oil, goji, spiralina, chorella, berries and there's more. Some you may find in your cupboard, some at your pharmacy and some at health food stores
They are foods that are nutrient dense and full of vitamins and antioxidants.  These help your overall general health and wellbeing but do you know what to do with them?
Here's 2 recipes to start you off.  The super green powder and spirolina powders are available at www.rosemarymanners.com.au or in the pharmacy.

Super Green Power Smoothie

Super foods; Are they sexy or what?

Superfoods are the January buzz words and we can't get enough of them.  In fact at Harmony Pharmacy we have filled the front window with them!

Many prominent health experts recommend the use of supplemental chlorella, a single celled algae, is most well known for its reported ability to reduce heavy metal and chemical toxicity in the body. It is also considered a good source of B-vitamins and quality protein for vegetarians, and has a range of health benefits including: increased cognition, enhanced immunity and digestion, and it may also aid maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. Like a lot of 'superfoods' and 'green' products there are undeniable benefits from taking chlorella. The question is: Could you be getting more from your 'Greens'?... Good Green Stuff is a product that I use and recommend to my athletes and patients, and it incidentally includes chlorella as one of the core ingredients.
Spirulina – The other algal superfood. Included in the Good Green Stuff formula is another algal superfood: spirulina. This provides many synergistic effects with chlorella, due to its higher protein content and higher amounts of essential fatty acids and certain b-vitamins. It makes sense to include both of these ingredients to get the greatest nutritional benefits.
But there is more to the Good Green Stuff than these superfoods! Good Green Stuff incorporates a range of highly alkaline and nutrient dense vegetable extracts to further provide a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals and increase alkalinity (which is important because our modern lifestyle and diet promotes low grade chronic acidosis that is damaging to the body.) Antioxidant rich fruits and berries are also included to help offset the effects of free radicals (that cause premature aging and encourage inflammation), whilst adaptogenic herbs in the formula help our bodies to respond to stress more effectively.
Finally, the digestive and detoxification benefits of chlorella and spirulina are enhanced by the addition of herbs that support digestion, gastro-intenstinal health and provide liver and kidney support (such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion, Slippery Elm and Ginger.) So.... You could take chlorella, spirulina, a multivitamin/mineral, antioxidants and a range of herbal tinctures each and every day (and drive yourself mad in the process!) Or... You could take one serving a day of Good Green Stuff! More on Good Green Stuff here.

Seven Women

From humble beginnings.... Seven Women is a not for profit organization. We provide skills training and employment for disabled women in Nepal to become self sufficient by making beautiful craft which you can buy here on this site or from our wonderful retailers around Australia. Seven Women began in 2008, when founder Australian, Steph Woollard, funded skills training for seven women she met who at the time were operating out of a tin shed. WIth these newly learnt skills the women made hand made items designed by Steph to sell in the Australian market. 100% of the profits from the sales of these products have been spent on building the project into a women skills training centre which to date has employed and trained over 450 women. 450 women trained and employed
YOU can make a difference, we can make a difference.  At the pharmacy we are making up toiletry bags for the new women who enter the centre. You can donate $10.00 to each bag that we send to Nepal through the Seven Women Organisation.  Each will contain simple things that we take for granted, a toothbrush, soap,  toothpaste, face cloth and some sanitary pads.

Do you have a hearing problem?

Free Hearing Check at Cremorne Pharmacy
by an Audioligist from Australian Hearing
January 30th 1-3pm   Book Now  99531503
FREE

Do you or someone you know have a hearing problem? Referring  someone to an audiologist is simple and could significantly enhance the quality of their life. It's often easy to tell if someone has a hearing problem. They will ask you to repeat yourself or they will only pick up certain words and guess what you have said. You can help identify a hearing loss by asking the patient some simple questions: Do you often ask people to repeat themselves? Do you find it difficult to follow conversations when there is background noise? Do others complain that you turn the TV up too loud? Do you have trouble hearing the phone ring? Even though a patient might come in for a different problem, if you suspect they have a hearing loss, it's important to address it. Research shows it takes people up to seven years to take action. Their family has probably already told them to get their hearing checked, but they are often reluctant to do it .  Act now it's close and simple at your friendly pharmacy.
